Sister Corita Kent was a trailblazing artist, activist, and religious sister. Her bold graphic style rivaled Andy Warhol and she influenced generations of creators through her teaching. Her silk screen prints engaged with the issues of her day, particularly the movements against the Vietnam War and for civil rights. In her role as Chair of the Art Department at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, she organized mass gatherings for Mary’s Day and other happenings. Her vibrant style was emblematic of a larger shift within American Roman Catholicism in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. She ultimately left her order and, in the wake of a cancer diagnosis, did prolific graphic design work. She died in 1986 and it is only in recent years that her work has begun to be re-examined as part of the larger Pop Art movement.
